CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

January 27, 6:15 P.M.

Alexandria, Virginia

MARINA BECK GRIPPED the steering wheel tightly as an old expression echoed in her thoughts: once is chance, twice is coincidence, and three times is a pattern. Previously, she had held out hope that the man who had been watching her was just a random pervert. That was creepy enough, but she could deal with that kind of thing. If she ignored them or showed them she was tough, they usually went away. But after a third incident, she could no longer deny the ugly truth. Someone was watching her every move, and he had a very specific reason for doing so.

The most recent event had taken place minutes earlier. She had met Tara at Yuri, their favorite sushi spot. Located on King Street, it was just three blocks from the coffee shop where the second incident had taken place. Marina had felt fine all the way through their meal, but when they exited the restaurant, she felt someone’s eyes on her. She didn’t actually see the man this time, but she knew he was out there watching her. Sensing someone’s eyes were on her was a skill she’d possessed since she was a teenager.

Her car stopped at a red light. She reached over and pulled open the bag that was sitting on the seat next to her, exposing the grip of her Glock 19. The 9mm was small in the hand, but she knew how to use it. Her father’s friend Tony Chen had trained her for the last two years, honing her skills to the point of lethal expertise.

She wouldn’t hesitate to defend herself if necessary, but her goal wasn’t to kill the person who was following her. She’d only do that if she had to. Her goal was to figure out who it was and why he was following her. Despite her best efforts, Marina couldn’t answer the latter question. She couldn’t come up with a single reason why someone would want to follow her. She led a drama-free life, and as far as she knew, she didn’t have any true enemies.

She wondered if it had anything to do with her father. After all, he’d encountered hundreds of nasty people over the years, including many who had spent time in jail. But if someone was angry with her father, why wasn’t the person following him? Maybe the man had been following her father until he left town. Or perhaps they thought harming her would cause him more pain. That made more sense, and it gave her all the more incentive to find out what was going on.

Then there was Brent. Was he the man in the cap? She’d asked herself that question several dozen times over the last two days, but there wasn’t a clear answer. One part of her couldn’t imagine him stalking anyone. He hadn’t been particularly happy about their breakup, but he hadn’t been overly upset either. Then again, the calm reaction did seem a bit odd. Yes, he
